The Development of Model for Parent Cooperation in Teaching Management toward Emotional Intelligence and Learning Achievement of Hearing Impaired Students

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to 1) study the physical characteristics, emotional intelligence and the academic achievements of hearing impaired students in higher education, 2) develop a model of parental cooperation in teaching and learning of hearing impaired students, and 3) study the effects of the parental cooperation model in teaching and learning in terms of both emotional intelligence and the academic achievements of hearing impaired students. In the first phase, data were collected from a survey of 207 hearing impaired students in undergraduate level. Subsequently, The second phase has gathered data from the in-depth interview. The 17 of academicians and parents were interviewed in order to find the suitable model. In addition, the third phase is the test of using the parents' cooperation in teaching management with 10 parents and hearing impaired students for the time period of 8 weeks. The research results were as follows: 1) the sample has the hearing impairment and this has the opinion that the factor in the context of the family will have the effect on the learning highest, followed by the educational institution support and the assistance respectively. Their average scores in the components of emotional intelligence were at normal level in 5 domains: and were lower than the normal criterion in 4 domains: sympathy, responsibility, relationship, and life satisfaction. The development of the parental cooperation model on the learning of the hearing-impaired students were presented in a four-dimensional model consisting of comprise groups of people, communicating for knowledge acquisition, the contents to create collaboration, and the factors as supporting the network. The results from implementing the model reveled that there was communication between groups of parents, their ability and behavior operate the social network were improved, and their learning behaviors were increased in all domains. For students with hearing impairment, they gained higher level of emotional intelligence in motivation and their scores of learning achievement in Information Resources Development course were increared.
